SANYO’s Project to Transform its Kasai Plant into an Eco-friendly Plant
Selected as One of “Model Projects Promoting Low CO2 Emissions” by MLIT

Tokyo, December 10, 2009 – SANYO is pleased to announce that its “Green Energy Park” under construction at the Kasai Plant (Kasai City, Hyogo Prefecture) has been selected by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) as one of the “FY2010*1 2nd Model Projects Promoting Low CO2 Emissions for Houses & Buildings.” The “Green Energy Park” is scheduled for completion in July 2010.

Today, CO2 emissions from homes and businesses continue to increase. Given these circumstances, the MLIT is powerfully promoting reduction of CO2 emissions from houses and buildings, and as part of this initiative it is publicly soliciting projects which involve construction of houses and buildings with low CO2 emissions. For the projects which have been selected, a part of their construction cost will be subsidized by the government. For this fiscal year, from among the 52 projects entered, 20 projects have been selected, including SANYO’s “Green Energy Park,” which received a high evaluation for being a “highly-proactive project to create a futuristic environment-conscious plant that goes a step ahead of the times.”

SANYO has started to undertake full-fledged expansion of its energy solution business to bring about a dramatic reduction of CO2 emissions and running cost to various facilities, such as factories, schools, and stores, through offering the Smart Energy Systems (SES) which combine technologies for Energy Creation (photovoltaic system), Energy Storage (rechargeable battery), and Energy Saving (commercial equipment, etc.).

The “Green Energy Park” is SANYO’s project to renovate its Kasai Plant by adding a group of new facilities, including a new HEV lithium-ion battery factory and administration building. To accelerate the practical application of the SES, the “Green Energy Park” will function as a proving test site and with an investment of approximately 5 billion yen, a large-scale Smart Energy System is being installed as a “Plant SES.” This system combines individual technologies, such as a 1MW HIT solar power generation system (Energy Creation); a 1.5MWh large-capacity high-voltage lithium-ion battery (Energy Storage); and an energy management system for coordinating a variety of energy-saving equipment, with a system to integrally control all these. Through making full use of these functions, dramatic reduction of CO2 emissions and optimum utilization of energy will be promoted.

Through this large-scale SES project, an annual CO2 emission reduction of 2,480 tons is expected.
