Global water resources are said to amount to 1.4 billion km3, but most of this is seawater, with fresh water accounting for only 2.5% of the total.
The majority of the freshwater is frozen in glaciers or held underground. Freshwater from rivers and lakes, which we can use directly, is indeed a valuable resource, but it accounts for only 0.01% of the Earth's water resources.
